THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG
Jazz @ The Haycock Hotel, Wansford, Peterborough PE8 6JA
Sunday 18th May @ 2:30 PM
The carnival atmosphere of the New Orleans Mardi-gras will be recalled on Sunday (18th May) with a special presentation - THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG'
John Petters Hot Five will be blowing up a storm as part of the 'Jazz at the Haycock' season at the Haycock Hotel, London Rd, Wansford, at 2:30 PM.
Born 4th August 1901, into poverty stricken, New Orleans, Louis Armstrong, the grandson of slaves, became the most important musician of the 20th century. He was a virtuoso trumpeter who was truly a genius - his talent honed in the parade bands and red light district of the city.
The Blues, which brought a depth and focus to his performance, was embedded in his consciousness.
In the 1920's Armstrong completely changed the style of popular music, both instrumentally and vocally. Louis' influence shaped the careers of Bing Crosby in the '20s, Glenn Miller in the '30s, Sinatra in the '40s and Presley in the '50s.
He was a massive star on records, radio, films and television.
Satchmo, as he was called, had smash hits with 'Mack the Knife', 'Hello Dolly' and 'What a Wonderful World'.
One of his last recordings 'We Have All The Time in The World', was used in a Bond movie and has kept the Armstrong flame alight with the mass public thirty seven years after his death.
Such is the appeal of his gravely voice, Armstrong recordings often pop up in TV commercials.
For Sunday's concert, ex Acker Bilk cornetist, Ken Sims will be on hand to demonstrate the style and panache of Satchmo. Fellow Bilk sideman, the extraordinarily talented, banjo and guitarist Roy James, will be featured throughout.
Multi-reedman, and ex Chris Barber star, Trevor Whiting returns with some powerful clarinet in New Orleans tradition.
Swinging double bass from Keith Donald and John Petters' driving drumming will complete this exciting ensemble.
An afternoon of traditional jazz will guarantee to entertain and delight as the band takes a trip down the Mississippi to Basin St. in New Orleans.
